At Karma, we don't just champion change — we celebrate the institutions that have been at the forefront of global transformation. And in honor of United Nations Day, we’re taking the time to reflect on the history, vision, and ongoing mission of this world-changing organization.
The UN, in essence, was born from the ashes of World War II. After the global conflict, leaders worldwide recognized the dire need for an international organization that would foster cooperation and prevent future wars.
1945: The year the world changed. On October 24th, 1945, the UN Charter was ratified by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council: the USA, UK, USSR, France, and China. The United Nations was officially formed, signaling a new era of international collaboration.
Why "United Nations"? The term was first coined by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 when 26 nations pledged to continue fighting against the Axis Powers. The alliance's name beautifully encapsulates its very essence: Unity.
The UN developed the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to address the biggest challenges humanity faces today. From eradicating poverty to ensuring clean water and sanitation for all, these goals represent a global call to action.
The SDGs were established in 2015, marking a global commitment to ensure a better and more sustainable future for all. Each goal is intertwined, reflecting the complexity of the challenges we face. And at Karma, these goals guide our mission, acting as our compass for a more sustainable world.
This United Nations Day, let's not just reflect on the progress we've made but also focus on the journey ahead. Here's how you can celebrate with purpose:
